Security at every step

Keep your account secured and your information protected.

How we protect you

We start with your card

Your chip-enabled TCF® debit card is encrypted and has multilayer authentication, giving your account extra security. When you use your card at a chip-enabled payment terminal, the embedded chip generates a unique code for your transaction that can’t be used again. This provides better protection of your card number and personal information, making it more difficult for fraudsters to get and use.

You can lock your debit card if it’s lost

Instantly lock your lost debit card to prevent new charges, right from the mobile app. Log into digital banking or the mobile app, select My debit cards and move your setting to locked. Easily unlock your card when you find it by moving your setting back to unlocked. Once your debit card is locked, new transactions made at ATMs, in store, online, by mobile payment or by phone will be declined.

Your phone adds security

You can use mobile wallet, such as Apple Pay®, Google Pay™ or Samsung Pay, to make secure purchases online, in apps and at your favorite stores. When you use these options, your debit card number is never shared with the merchant.

We keep an eye on your activity

As an added level of security, we monitor your account activity. If we suspect that a transaction might be fraudulent, we’ll contact you by phone or email, or we’ll text you if you’re enrolled in digital banking and have given us your mobile phone number. If you want to receive alerts about suspected fraud, please keep your email address and phone number updated, which you can do in digital banking under settings. We will decline transactions we believe to be fraudulent.

If your card is compromised, we’ve got you covered with zero fraud liability:

This means you won’t be held responsible for fraudulent charges made with your card. Certain conditions apply for personal accounts and small business accounts.

How you can protect yourself

There are lots of ways you can work to keep your account even more secure.

  • Sign the back of your debit card as soon as you receive it.
  • Actively monitor account activity and keep an eye out for suspicious transactions.
  • Set up alerts in digital banking.
  • Don’t share your account information with anyone who calls you, and never write down your PIN where it could be seen by others.
  • Use a mobile wallet to pay with your phone at stores, online and in apps.
  • Sign up for online statements so paper statements aren’t delivered to your mailbox, where they could be stolen or lost.
