Tips to Avoid Overdraft and Deposit Service Fees

Overdraft and returned item service fees occur when you do any of the following without having sufficient funds in your account:

  • Write a check
  • Withdraw money from an ATM
  • Use your debit card to make a purchase
  • Make an automatic bill payment or other electronic payment

The best way to avoid overdraft, returned item and deposit service fees is to manage your account wisely so you do not overdraw it.

  • Keep track of how much money you have in your checking account by keeping your account register up-to-date and recording all transactions. Correct your checkbook register balance if you receive notice of overdraft or returned item service fees, and also deduct any related deposit service charges. Do not write checks or perform transactions if you have an insufficient balance in your account.

  • Pay attention to your electronic transactions and record ATM withdrawals and fees, debit card purchases, and online payments. Use TCF Express Teller ATMs to avoid foreign ATM fees.

  • Keep track of automatic bill payments you may have set up for utilities, insurance, loan payments, etc.

  • Maintain the required minimum balance and review account statements each month. Look for any unauthorized transactions and notify us immediately if you suspect any have occurred on your account.

  • Check your balance often by signing in to TCF Online Banking or phoning our automated TCF Phone Banking service. Remember that the balance information from customer service, ATM or the online banking service may not include transactions that have not been posted to your account. Also, not all funds in your account may be available for withdrawal or other transactions.

If you do accidentally overdraw your account, deposit money into the account as soon as possible to cover the overdraft amount plus any fees. To apply for an Overdraft Protection Line of Credit, visit a TCF location near you.

If you would prefer that we do not authorize: 1) ATM transactions or 2) Point of Sale transactions for merchant purchases made with your TCF Check Card or TCF ATM Card when your current balance is insufficient, write us at: TCF Bank, P.O. Box 9110, Minneapolis, MN 55480-9110. You must include your name, address, all account numbers you want included, and indicate your desire to have TCF not authorize transactions.
